About GO SOAR

Improving Surgical Outcomes Globally

A worldwide network of gynaecological oncologists working together to reduce international disparities in surgical outcomes through collaborative research.

Background

Gynaecological cancers collectively after breast currently account for the second greatest disease burden amongst cancers affecting women, with incidence set to rise by 69% by the year 2040.

Globally there are approximately 589,124 cases per annum of gynaecological cancer surgery with curative intent. Surgery has historically had a disproportionately low profile in global health priorities at the WHO due to the erroneous perception it is a high cost intervention benefitting a small segment of society.

Recent interest in surgical outcomes has been prompted by recognition that there are disparities in access to life saving and disability preventing surgeries, particularly for rural and marginalised populations in lower and middle income countries (LMICs).

Only ~25% of gynaecological oncology patients have access to safe, affordable, and timely surgery. While cancer mortality is decreasing in high income countries (HICs), the opposite is true in LMICs.

Our Founding Story

The Global Gynaecological Oncology Surgical Outcomes Collaborative (GO SOAR) was founded in January 2021 with the intention of developing a global network of gynaecological oncologists.

Our network ensures equal representation of both high-income countries (HICs) and low-middle income countries (LMICs), with the long-term ability to collaborate on outcome studies and collect real world outcome data.

We evaluate prevalent practice and advise country group specific policy formation to reduce international disparities in surgical outcomes.

Our Mission

What We Aim to Achieve

GO SOAR aims to improve surgical outcomes through collaborative research by focusing on four key areas.

Set the Research Agenda

Through research prioritization in gynaecological oncology, ensuring the most pressing questions are addressed.

Gather High Quality Data

Via a centralised database accessible to all institutions that perform gynaecological oncology surgery to enable standardised reporting of outcomes.

Build Sustainable Research

By producing protocols and guidelines that can be implemented internationally, bridging the gap between high and low-middle income countries.

Train Future Leaders

Developing the researchers and clinical leaders of tomorrow through mentorship and collaborative opportunities.
